Mental health

I don't really constrain myself to talking about or thinking about things specific to computer sceince, but somehow it always drifts back twoards that.I think there is some real dissonance between the world we were programmed for and the world we live in now. We are tribal by nature. Our tribal nature is rivaled by many societal pulls, maybe to prioritize making homey, leaving your family to go work a shitty job in a studio apartment in New York City. Then we wonder why the suicide and depression rate is higher than it ever has been in the past, we wonder why kids are developing all sorts of mental disorders widespread. It's not because these kids are just now noticing them, its because they're being raised in an environment so different than they were designed to be raised in.

I hypothesize on the notion that we are designed, a concept somwhere inbetween devine creation and out current understanding of evolutionary mechanisms. I believe there is apt proof that the truth exists somewhere in between these two. Our designed body, psychology was made for a hunter gather society where tribal instincts were vital for the survival of the tribe. It is understandable that a such a deviation in environment might create a dissonacne, a disconnect in the individual's psyche, that have mental health implications. Studying the complexity of evolution and psychology and its effect on us in its fullest depth is comparable to trying to solve a nonlinear differentiable equasion. What differs is the side we know, we are trying to study patterns, distributions, behaviors in science that are consequences of higer order relationships. When I attempt solve a differentiable equasion, especially a higher order nonlinear one, it can get very complex very fast. Often times these higher order differnetiable equasions don't even have solutions, they just are charactarized as relationships between rates of change.

I think it is helpful to think of a solution to diffenentiable functions like a choreographed dance, and example of a solution might look something like y = e^t. We can see the path of the dance as far into the future as we would like to, we can determine end behaviors, asymptotic behaviors, and physcial structures that exist in this dance. If the solution is the coreographed dance, than the differeniable equasion IS the dance, it shows the true nature of how all the moving parts interrelate. At its core, the differentiable equasion is the true nature of the dance. The choreographer is us trying to understand these interactions so that we might predict state of the dance in 20 seconds. I highly recommend this article by Stephen Strotgatz: "https://www.sciencefriday.com/articles/the-language-of-calculus/".He says in the article that differentiable equations are the language of the Universe, and he expands on that in a really interesting and beautiful way.

This necessary sidenote about dif eqs provides context for why evolution, psychology, and all natural sciences are so hard to study. We are not trying to understand the true nature of the dance, we are trying to find a choreographed explanation for the way things happen, when the reason why they happen is simply the because of the dance itself. The best musicians in the world are not those who went to the best colleges and studied music theory for decades, but those who feel the music and can connect with it. These real musicians that have a relationship with music don't feel it necessary to understand and study the choreography because they can feel the dance. This is the context needed to understand that there are domains of thought beyond the intellectual. Maybe the spirit is birthed from this place, and simply cannot be put into words and therefore cannot be studied in the classical contex of studying. It may too be possible that the spirit is what makes life worth living, a source of conteness and happiness. We must accept that the spirit was designed and sculpted through evolution even though we may not know specific mechanisms. It is a logical thought then to think that due to such an abrupt change in the history of life and our environment, we are not as connected spiritually to the envionrment as we once were. And in this disconnect from the enviornemnt that our spirit was built for, we might lose the feelings of happiness and contentness that come with it.
